Teiichi Sakurai
is the owner/chef of Teppo Yakitori and Sushi Bar on Greenville which
he opened in April 1995. His experience as a sushi chef at Royal Tokyo
in Dallas for four years provided Teiichi with valuable knowledge
of the Dallas restaurant marketplace and strong connections with vendors,
other restaurant owners and customers. Joining Teiichi at Teppo is
sushi chef is Masayuki Otaka, a personal friend of Teiichi's from
Tokyo. Prior to Teppo, Otaka was the sushi chef at Anzu and previous
to that was sushi chef at Nakamoto.
Teiichi was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan. He apprenticed with a
highly regarded restaurant owner in Japan who trained him in the fine
art of sushi and yakitori while going to high school. In 1985, Teiichi
moved to the U.S. to go to college. He graduated from Texas State
Technical Institute (TSTI) in Amarillo, TX where he earned a degree
in airplane mechanics. During college, Teiichi worked at the yakitori
bar at Hibachi Restaurant in Amarillo to help fund his college education.
Focusing on his love of the restaurant business, Teiichi moved to
Dallas after graduating and became sushi chef at Royal Tokyo where
he worked for four years, 1990-1994, prior to opening Teppo. Teppo
won "Best New Restaurant" in 1995 by the Dallas Morning
News and continues to receive his reviews by food critics for his
contemporary and fresh approach to sushi and yakitori. |
